Enlisting in the RAN with the rating of Ordinary Seaman in April 1940, Sub McNally was commissioned in September 1942 and seved on several vessels inclusing the SS Stratheden and HMAS Westralia. He was on board the supply ship HMAS Matafele when it disappeared with all hands whilst on a routine voyage between Townsville and Milne Bay sometime after the 20 June 1944. Listed on the Roll of Honour as having died on the 24 June 1944, Sub Mcnally was aged 23 at the time of his death and has no known grave.
