Sergeant Lloyd Charles Melrose 410002 of 77SQN RAAF was shot down off Milne Bay in New Guinea after taking off from Gurney airstrip to take part in an attack against a large Japanese bomber raid on the area
His Kittyhawk fighter A29-169 crashed into the sea - his body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Port Moresby Memorial
