Boomerang aircraft A46-109 and A46-132 from 4SQN RAAF were on a tactical reconnaissance mission with an escort of USAAF P-39 aircraft from the 41st Fighter Squadron when they were engaged in combat by Japanese fighters near the mouth of the Sanga River on the New Guinea coast
Both RAAF pilots were shot down in the ensuing dogfight - their bodies were not recovered and they are commemorated on the Lae Memorial
