Son of John Edwin NEWTON and Amelia Mary nee VOWLES; husband of Doris Margaret Newton, of Gembrook North, Victoria, Australia.

Married St George Church, Malvern in 1940 to Doris Margaret Atkinson.

Survived by his wife Doris and daughter, parents, sister Linley Daws and brothers Edwin, Wilfred, Douglas Trevor and Ernest.

Death Officially
Confirmed

Some little time back Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Newton, of Narre Warden Nth. received tidings through unofficial sources, that their son, VX20449 Pte  Walter Newton had died from illness while a prisoner of  war in the Hands of the Japanese in Burma.  he sad tidings were officially confirined on March 3rd, and the sympathy of the whole district will go out to these well known residents of Narre Warren Nth. in the loss of their boy. Official circles revealed that Walter died of cholera in May. 1943. He was then 29 years of age and up till this brief 5-day illness had been in good health.
Fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Newton, he enlisted in 1940 and was one of five sons serving in the Forces. He was taken prisoner when Java fell and several cards had since been him. When these ceased,  enquiries made re vealed that he had succumbed to illness.

Pte Newton was married and sincere condolence is extended to his wife and little daughter in their sad loss. Before enlisting he was working in his parents’ store and was well and favorably known throughout the district for his cheerful and helpful manner. Before coming to Narre Warren Nth, he was a playing member, of the Belgrave Sth. Cricket Club and the Emerald Football. Club. In sport, as  in everyday life, he was one of the best.
