Alexander and Percy Spall were brothers from New Farm in Brisbane Queensland. Both had attended the Fortitude Valley State School. They both enlisted in late 1916 and by the time of the Battle of Messines they were serving with the 49th Battalion. “Alec”, a dray driver in Brisbane before the war was reportedly killed by shell fire and his remains were lost. Percy was only 18 years of age and met a similar fate. Their mates reported they had written to the mother of the two brothers and informed her of their deaths.
