Born in 1914, Ralph Vardon Norbury joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1928 as a Cadet Midshipman and served until 1931

In November 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force as an Air Cadet (trainee pilot), he was killed while flying in Westland Wapiti aircraft A5-35 from Number 1 Flying Training School based at Point Cook

The aircraft crashed after dropping out of formation; Cadet Norbury was believed to have been flying on the right of formation of three aircraft flown solo by cadets. During a gentle turn to the right he was not again sighted by the other pilots until the crash occurred near Laverton
