On his enlistment application James noted that his current address was c/- Lake Barine Hotel, Kulara Qld (Kulara is near Yungaburra) and that he was working as a Ply Mill Labourer for Cairns Plywoods at Yungaburra but had only been in that job for 12 months. Prior to that he had been a farm labourer. His next of kin was given as his mother who he noted as invalided and residing with his sister Mrs E Condon in Ravenshoe, who was later officially noted as his next of kin. Ravenshoe was and is a farming community and there is every liklihood that James was working and living in that district prior to Yungaburra.
His sister and her husband visited the Runnymeade Airmen's memorial in England in 1985 but could not find a record of her brother's name. She later enquired in 1989 of Airforce Records for a copy of his Flying Logbook. In letter of reply it was noted his service records reveal that he was in the crew of Wellington HE 657 that took off from Hani West landing ground (Middle East) at 2108 hours on the 7 August 1945 to attack Cape Palmi, Italy and failed to return to base.
