Ronald Richard PROTHEROE was born on 4th April, 1915 in Lockhart, NSW to Samuel PROTHEROE and Margaret Frances HARRISON
He enlisted in Caulfied,Victoria with the Australian Army on 30th May, 1940
He served in Palestine as a Driver . In November 1942 the 2/106 General Transport Company was sent to New Guinea and Ronald was then attached to the 1st Papuan Infantry Battalion
He was accidentally drowned in the Watut River near Shaggy Ridge, New Guinea on 4th July, 1943 - the nearby Mount Protheroe was named after him - his body was never found and his name is commemorated in the Australian War Memorial, the Port Moresby Cemetery Memorial & the Roll of Honour in Lockhart, NSW
He was awarded the Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, Australian Service Medal, 1939-45 Star & the Africa Star
