How We Served
The final resting place for; - 2769, V43055 & VX81066 Captain Warburton Stanley Redpath of Fitzroy and Moonee Ponds, Victoria had been employed as a railway porter when he enlisted for War Service on the 17th of March 1916, and was allocated to reinforcements for the 59th Battalion 1st AIF.
Embarked for England and further training on the 2nd of September, Warburton entered camp at Hurdcott on the 21st of November with the 15th Training Battalion, before proceeding to France on the 29th of August 1917.
Joining his Battalion in the trenches on the 7th of December, Warburton’s service in the field would be continuous, aside a short respite of Leave to England during October 1918.
With the end of the War having been declared, Warburton began his repatriation back to Australia, departing England on the 10th of June 1919. Following his return to Melbourne, Warburton received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 19th of September 1919.
Warburton re-joined the Australian Military Forces in 1924, serving with the 57/60th Battalion, with which he would eventually be commissioned as an officer.
With the start of a second World War, Warburton was called up for service on the 3rd of February 1941, and was assigned back to full time duty in October 1942, serving firstly as an Area Officer before being appointed to Special Duties in New South Wales as an Amenities Officer.
Warburton continued to serve throughput the War, and received his transfer to Land Headquarters Australian Army Amenities Service 3rd Military District. Whilst still in-service Warburton was evacuated to the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg), due to illness, where he passed whilst still a patient on the 9th of April 1945. Warburton was aged 53.
Following his death, Captain Warburton Redpath, a veteran of two World Wars, was formally laid to rest within Spirngvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
