Thomas Holland
Thomas was my great-uncle. I knew him as I grew up, as he and his wife lived just one street away. He was a very tall, upright gentleman, always friendly to talk to.
Uncle Tom and Aunty Ethel I remember, had two very 'yappy' pomeranian dogs and friendly magpies wandering around the front garden.
Thomas' South African campaign medal included bars indicating each of the six campaigns he fought in.
His elder brother William also served in the South African campaign and was mentioned in dispatches for gallantry.
In World War I Thomas was joined by his two younger brothers Albert and Joseph. Unfortunately, Albert was killed in France, aged 22 years.
Thomas lived to age 80.
