Sergeant William Llewellyn Scanlan 406736 RAAF was the co-pilot aboard USAAF 2nd Bombardment Squadron B-26 Marauder 40-1529 "Fury" which was one of three B-26 bombers from the 22nd Bombardment Group, 5th US Air Force (known as the "Red Raiders") assigned to attack Japanese positions at Buna
Fury was last seen flying northwards through the Kokoda Gap area of the Owen Stanley Mountains with no trace of the aircraft being located in post-war searches
Sergeant Scanlan is commemorated on the Port Moresby Memorial as his body was not recovered

His parents were Michael Joseph SCANLAN & Muriel May RICHARDS who married in Perth in 1913
William died on 17th December, 1942 while serving with the 2B Squadron of the USA Air Force - he was with the Head Quarters of the North East Area in Townsville, Queensland at the time (RAAF)
