Taken from book "quirindi 1939-1950 Courage and Commitment" by Dorothy Durrant
452 Sqn left from Bankstown NSW to fly to Batchelor in the NT. S/Ldr Throssell-Smith had engine trouble leaving Bankstown and arrived at a later date. On the day he was killed the Australian pilots flew out over Darwin to intercept 25 Japanese bombers and 25 fighters (Raid 53 on Darwin)

Squadron Leader Thorold-Smith DFC was killed when his Spitfire aircraft BS231 crashed near Darwin, NT - at the time he was the Commanding Officer of 452 Squadron
