James Reid Tobin- murdered at bourke st theatre melbourne defending a woman.
ON THIS DAY – January 8, 1943
Detectives inquiring into the death of Staff-sgt James Reid Tobin, 35, RAAF instructor at a WAAAF training school near Melbourne, who was fatally injured after an alleged altercation at a Bourke st theatre on this day in 1943, charged an aircraftman from an Air Force centre in northern NSW with murder. Tobin, it is alleged, was struck by another RAAF man in the foyer of the theatre after a quarrel, and when he fell he struck his head on the tiled floor. He died later at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Det-sgt S. H. McGuffle, who was in charge of inquiries, and a sergeant attached to the RAAF service police, after travelling 900 miles to a northern NSW Air Force centre, detained a cook at an RAAF officers’ mess. He was returned under escort on a charge of having violated an Air Force regulation. Later at the city watchhouse Kevin Evans, 21, of Mackay was charged with the murder of Tobin.
