Merton Chanter WHEREAT was born on 30th March, 1904 in Tenterfield, New South Wales

His parents were Edward William WHEREAT & Edith Anne CHANTER who married on 7th November, 1898 in Moama, NSW

He marriead Jean Margaret DUFF in Sydney in 1933 and had one known son Rodney

Merton enlisted on 20th June 1940 in Paddington and was with the 14th Field Company Royal Australian Engineers, 2nd Division (SN 439669) as a Quarter Master Sergeant & embarked from Fremantle, WA on 7th August, 1941 with the 2nd Company Australian Service Corp

He was taken Prisoner of War by the Japanese and interred in the Borneo Camp (Sandakan) on 16th February, 1942 after being transferred from Singapore, where he died from illness on 22nd March, 1945

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Labuan Memorial
