Son of Henry Edward and Jane Wicks of Inverell, NSW
Plane was Lancaster 111 DV171 and was on air operations over Holland. It had taken off at 15.00 hours to bomb a target in Holland which was successful however on the return flight the aircraft was struck by heavy flak and William was hit by shrapnel which had penetrate the body of the aircraft. It continued on and landed safely at it's own airfield.
