James was the second of three sons of Alexander Cumming Wilson (born 1886 in Tiaro, QLD) and Elizabeth Ann McRobert (born 1892 in Tiaro, QLD). Alexander and Elizabeth married in 1913 in Maryborough, QLD and raised their three sons on the family farm - Mavisbank - at Tiaro in QLD.
James was a Sergeant (Service No: 405103) with 108 Squadron RAAF when his plane (Wellington IcHF844) crashed into the sea near Greece. Brother Andrew - a Sergeant with 2/26 Infantry Battalion - was a PoW of the Japanese; and older brother Thomas was a Sergeant (Service No: Q267213) in the ACMF.
