Richard Sextus Daly WINTER was born on 19th February, 1920 in Ceylond, India

His parents were William Sextus Daly WINTER and Annie Gertrude Elizabeth GRAY who married in St Pauls Church, Kandy, Ceylon, Sri Lanka

His father took up planting in Ceylon and farming once he arrived in Australia - The whole family of parents & 10 children all born in Ceylon came to Australia and one more child (Robert) was born on board the ship (RMS Maloja) en route to Australia where they arrived on 21st December, 1926

Richard married Lorraine MEDBURY in 1944 in Western Australia - one son Richard WINTER

He enlisted in Claremont, WA on 2nd December, 1940 & was living in Belmont WA at the time

He saw service in the Middle East at Tobruk from April 1941 and at El Alamein from July 1942 and the 2/48th Battatlion was sent to New Guinea and in April, 1945 to Morotai, Borneo

He was promoted to Corporal on 30.1.41 and to Lance Sergeant on 7.11.42 & reverted to Corporal on 25.10.44

Units he served in - Service No. 5439 and WX32775

66th AA Coy from 5.7.1941, 20 Employ. Platoon 15.12.1941, HQ 1 Australian Corp. 5.7.1944 - his last unit was 2/48th Australian Infantry Battalion - Previous 10 months AASC 1939-1940, 55 AA Coy.

Richard was Killed in Action on 3rd May, 1945 at Tarakan, Borneo - he was buried in the field & later reburied in Labuan War Cemetery

Inscription reads:

"DEARLY LOVED AND SADLY MISSED BY LOVING WIFE LORRIE AND SON RICHARD"

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Roll of Honour in Belmont, Western Australia
