Sydney Robert AHRENS was born on 14th June, 1879 in Milton near Ulladulla, NSW
His parents were Carl Franz Wilhelm AHRENS & Dorothy Elisabeth Christine DREWES who were both born in Hagenow-Stadt, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany & married on 11th November, 1860 in St Georges Lutheran Church, Whitechapel, London. His parents left England with one child and moved to New Zealand where they had a large family and later moved to NSW where more children were born including Sydney
Sydney enlisted in 1899 with the 2nd NSW Mounted Rifles and embarked for the Boer War on 15th March, 1901 from Sydney on the transport ship Maplemore
His troop served in Western & Eastern Transvaal & were involved with the Potgeitiers Convoy on the Vaal in South Africa
He died of Enteric Fever on 19th October, 1901 in Middleburg, South Africa and is buried in Middleburg Old Municipal Cemetery - his name is on a Memorial Plaque at St James Anglican Church in Sydney for the 2nd NSW Mounted Rifles
Sydney was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal
