Michael listed his occupation as labourer at the time of his enlistment. From local records, this was known to be at Dalton’s Flour Mill.
Michael was eager to enlist from the time war had been declared, however records indicate his mother was strongly opposed to his enlistment. Eventually when he did enlist, it was
with the 5th Contingent and was allocated to the 2nd New South Wales Mounted Rifles. The Regiment embarked from Sydney on the 17th March 1901.
Michael died at the age of 22 years, the cause of death is recorded as being enteric fever at Elandsfontein, Johannesburg 5.12.1901. He was buried at the Primrose Memorial Garden at Germiston. Michael is named on monument 6 in Primrose Cemetery Germiston Transvaal South Africa and on the Boer War memorial in Orange NSW.
