Edwin Charles Matthew BAWDEN was born in 1876 in Eldorado, Victoria
His parents were William Henry BAWDEN and Fanny Thomas HOLLOW
He joined the 4th Imperial Contingent (Victorian Imperial Bushmen) in 1900 which left Australia on the ship Victorian on 1st May, 1900
He saw service as a Farrier Sergeant from May 1900 to June 1901 in Rhodesia, West Transvall, Cape Colony including relief ot Philipstown (11th February 1901) capture of Boer guns at Reads Drift on 23rd Febuary and capture of Boer patrol near Doornkloof on 1st May 1901.
He returned home on the ship Britannic ill with measles and died in Melbourne Hospital eight days later of pneumonia supervening on measles
Edwin is buried in Eldorado Cemetery in Victoria and also has a memorial & a plaque in Victoria (see the following links for details & photos)

Trooper Edwin Bawden one of the invalided soldiers who arrived by the transport Britannic died in the Melbourne Hospital yesterday afternoon of pneumonia supervening on measles. The deceased was 23 years of age and belonged to Eldorado

DEATH OF A TROOPER - Edwin Bawden aged 23 who was a trooper in the Bushmens Continent died this evening in the Melbourne Hospital. the casue of death was bronchial pneumonia supervening on measles. The deceased was a native of Eldorado in the North eastern district and was a popular member of the contingent

Ed Bawden worked as a Blacksmith in Wilby in Victoria.
He was a keen footballer and played Aussie Rules for the Wilby Rovers. He enlisted to fight for the Queen & Empire, along with several footbal mates in 1900.
Ed was born in Eldorado, Victoria in 1876. The son of William and Fanny Bawden. He had seven sisters who mourned his death, a mere two days after his discharge in 1901. Ed contracted measles while returning home on the SS "Brittanic". He died from pnuemonia in Melbourne Hospital on 7 August 1901.
