SAILOR AND SOLDIER.
Evening Journal (Adelaide, SA: 1869 - 1912) Saturday 26 April 1902
SAILOR AND SOLDIER.
Tpr. Harold Beare, a youth of much promise, died in the Kroonstadt Hospital of enteric fever on the 9th inst, after serving with the Sixth South Australian I.B.C., under Gen. De Lisle, in all their engagements, with much credit to himself and South Australia. Tpr. Beare first joined the fife and drum band connected with the Naval Reserve, and paraded the streets at the send-off of the first contingent sent to the war by South Australia. When the Protector was ordered to China on active service he was one of the first to offer his services, and signed on as second-class boy, and while on service was promoted to ordinary sea man. He was not well pleased with his China experiences because, as he remarked, "We never had a fight." On the selection of the Sixth Contingent he presented himself in sailor uniform. He was proud of his appointment, and begged his parents not to stop him. He is spoken of as a loving son, possessed a great heart, and never neglected furnishing his home with his South African experiences. One of his officers wrote:—"You will be pleased to know that your son is a good man and a splendid soldier." Capt. Cornish also spoke very highly of him. He was a good rifle shot, and with so much ambition for naval or military work would, if spared, have made a name for himself. The deceased was a son of Senior-Constable Beare, a much respected officer of the police force.
