Henry Allwright BETTS was born on 23rd January 1878 in Hobart Tasmania
His parents were John Richard BETTS and Fanny Elizabeth WILKINSON
He enlisted with the First Tasmanian Mounted Infantry Contingent which left Launceston Tasmania on 27th October 1899 on board the transport ship MEDIC and arrived in Cape Town on 26th November
Henry was an assistant school teacher at Macquarie State School and also a Private in the Brighton Detachment when he took time off to enlist with the Mounted Infantry - he was promoted from Private to Lance Corporal
He was killed in action while in patrol duty near Dohnerpoch on 20th June, 1900 and is buried in Diamond Hill Memorial Cemetery Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

"Death of a Tasmanian Soldier
His Excellency the Governor has received the following cablegram from Sir Alfred Milnor - regret to inform you that Corporal H A Betts was killed near Dohnerpoch on June 20, H A Betts was previously a Private in the Brighton detachment. He was 21 years of age, a native of Hobart as was also is his father J R Betts , sometime adjuncant in the Tasmanian Rifle Regiment . Corpora Betts was on leave from his position as assistant teacher at Macquarie State School."

He received the South African medal and four clasps
