William Bonner of the 1st Australian Horse was the first local death from Rylstone NSW during the Boer War. Anecdotal evidence suggests he was killed by shrapnel while riding alongside his brother Jack, at a place near Gen Siding in South Africa. His brother Jack (John) Bonner enlisted again for the First World War but died of measles in the Liverpool camp not long after enlisting, on 15 October 1915 age 41. From the Boer War enlistment files William Thomas Bonner was given the regimental number 912 and his brother John the number 747 but these seem to have become confused.
