When Charles Chardon enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his mother at Yatala Hotel, Yatala. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 5th QIB, p. 129, it notes he directed part of his pay to his mother Mrs. J. Chardon, Yatala Hotel.
Charles Chardon was born on 15 May 1881 in Queensland, a son, one of 14 children, to Peter Franz Chardon and Jane Chardon (nee Lea). His parents were well known Licensed Victuallers. His brother Arthur Chardon also served in the Boer War, Private S.N. 176, 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen.
