John Wylie Crighton was born in Dromana in Victoria on 3rd  November 1876. His birth was registered early in 1877. He was the son of Hugh and Ellen Crighton. Wylie was his father's middle name.  John enlisted shortly after the Victorian Imperial Bushmen Roll were open in 1900.

He was part of the Mafeking Relief Force. John was Lt Nicholl's Orderly before being appointed Colonel Kelly's Orderly.

He fell victim to Enteric Fever and died in Mafeking Hospital. His final message was "Tell mother I am not affraid to die". John was buried in Mafeking Cemetery.

His Boer War Service Medal Entitlement was the QSA with three clasps: CC/TVL/RHOD.  Lest We Forget.
