Biography contributed by John Edwards

"Major-General French has written to Mr. M. Farrell, of this town, confirming the report of the death of his son (Private M. J Farrell) of enteric fever at Johannesburg on the 13th ultimo. Deceased, who was a member of the Second Regiment Mounted Rifles, was wounded in battle. He recovered, but was attacked with fever. His commanding officer in a private letter to the deceased's uncle speaks in glowing terms of his conduct during battle. Although severely wounded in the thigh he retained possession of his rifle and evaded capture by the Boers." - from the Sydney Morning Herald 06 Jul 1901 (nla.gov.au)
