Rowland Edward ( Ben) HARKUS was born on 17th July, 1869 in Moruya, NSW
His parents were William Theodore HARKUS and Amelia DeGaris YABSLEY
He joined the NSW Lancers and was part of the 2nd Contingent to go to South Africa which left Sydney on 17th January 1900 on the S.S. Moravian.
Rowland married in 1891 in Moruya to Armida Hermina Francisca ZIEGLER and had two children Dorothy & Rowland
Rowland died on 4th April, 1900 of Enteric Fever in Bloemfontein Hospital, South Africa
He is buried in President Brand Cemetery and also memoralized in the Australian War Memorial and the Boer War Memorial in Parramatta Park and also the memorial at Bloemfontein Cemetery.

Rowland Edward Harkus was the best known man in the Lancers regiment of New South Wales. He was a native of Moruya and for years was in the Postal Department of this colony, at first down on the South Coast and since the 17th May, 1892 at Parramatta. He was born on 17th July 1869 and so would have been 31 years Corporal Harkus was a married man, his wife having been forermly Miss A H F Ziegler of Pompey Point, Moruya. The young ladys father like her husbands was one of the pioneers of the Moruya district. Two children were the issue of the marriage, a girl and a boy , the eldest being now about six or seven years of age
