One would have liked this shearer to ask
What it had meant to him
To be up for the task
Of defending one’s rights
In the Great Shearers’ strike
And just what was that like.
Pete meant for Beira to sail
Not realising he’d never see it
From the ‘Manchester Port’s’ rail.
Pneumonia set in
So ‘twas for him Sydney ashore.
Sadly he died in a hospital bed
Far from the scene of the
Dutch and British bloodshed.
The first man to die

In the town of Sydney.
These verses were written to honour the first man from the Fourth Contingent who lost his life on 24 May 1900. Research gained while seeking information on the 400 men and officers allowed me to compose this tribute. The first member from this contingent to perish in South Africa was Jimmy Duggan #77 at Honen’s Nek on 13 July 1900.

Peter Stewart HASTIE was born on 17th December, 1859 in Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland
His parents were Robert HASTIE & Christina STEWART - his father was born in Beath Fife, Scotland and died in 1891 in Victoria and his mother was born in Aidrie, Scotland and died in Cygnet, Tasmania in 1914 - they married on 2nd January, 1849 in Linlithgow, West Lothian
His Mother was known to be living in Norwood, South Australia when her son died
The family arrived in Australia on the ship Star of India via Victoria on the 14th June, 1871
Peter embarked from Brisbane on 18th May 1900 on the ship Manchester Port with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen and was taken ill with pneumonia in Sydney Harbour
He died on 24th May, 1900 in St Vincents Hospital, Sydney on his way to serve in the Boer War & was given a full Military Funeral (see link for newspaper article)
