Arthur Edward Murphy was born in Melbourne in 1863. His father Edward Joseph Murphy, a Solicitor, was born in Ireland. He migrated to Melbourne and died in 1873 when Arthur was 12. His mother Mary Agenes Rowe was born in Tasmania. Mary Agnes Murphy migrated to England after her husband's death. Arthur had nine siblings and was educated in England. He returned to Australia to work on outback stations. He settled in Colac where he was a Grazier and Chairman of a Dairy Company. He was 37 years old and well established in his community when he volunteered for war service. It is likely that the recent death of Isobel, his wife who had just died childless was a factor. His mother and siblings were in England. Hence he had no family ties in Australia. He was prepared to serve as a Private as he had once served in VMR as PTE MURPHY A E [1213]. However he was commisioned as a 5VMR Lieutenant. Nine days later he embarked but was KIA.

LT MURPHY, Arthur Edward 5VMR was KIA on 29 May 1901. The day after his 38th birthday. Lest We Forget.
