Charles Edward Ernest UMPHELBY was born on 13th June, 1853 in Richmond , Victoria

His parents were Charles Washington UMPHELBY and Lydia MARZETTI

he married Ann Arundel AUSTIN in 1875 in Victoria

He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Australian Artillery, Special Service Officer

Charles died on 12th March, 1901 of wounds due to a stray bullet received two days earlier

He was buried temporarily on the Veldt and reburied in Bloemfontein Cemetery

Original grave marker reads: In memory of Colonel Umphelby of the Victorian Artillery, Victoria, Australia. Wounded on March 10 and died on March 12th. In sad remembrance. NSW Medical Corps
