He was born Cresswell Herbert WALTER on 7th October, 1873 in Caulfield, Victoria - His Boer War records have incorrect spelling of Crosswell
His parents were John Charles WALTER and Ann Christiana CRESSWELL
He enlisted with the 1st Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen - the Contigent left Tasmania on 26th April, 1900 on the Troopship Manhattan arriving at Beira on 28th May and then to Durban by 3rd June
He was killed by sniper fire on 9th April, 1901 in Pietersburg, South Africa & is buried in Polokwane, Northern Province, South Africa
