Frederick Robert Small emigrated to South Australia in 1913 from London with his parents and 7 brothers and sisters. He was aged 20 and worked as a carpenter for the firm Farmer Brothers in London. As South Australia needed farmers at the time the whole family was sent to work in the Murray Mallee. When war broke out in 1914 Fred was the first of his family to enlist, 4th Sept 1914. He served at Gallipoli and in France.
Fred married in 1922 and had 3 children. He did not like to share his war experiences with his family after the war.
