Lance Bombardier Desmond Noel Andersen (Service No: QX35961) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 18 December 1941 and served as a Private (Service No: Qwith 15th Battalion and 17th Field Regiment. He transferred to the AIF on 22 July 1942 and served with 5th Field Regiment and 2/11 Field Regiment in Darwin (13 July 1943 – 20 March 1944 and 11 May 1944 – 14 September 1944) and New Guinea and Solomon Islands (15 September 1944 – 18 December 1945). Lance Bombardier Andersen was Discharged on 7 January 1946. Brothers Edgar Anton (Service No: QX29381), Arnold Niel (Service No: QX27920) and Neville Joseph (Service No:QX501535) also served in WWII

Des was the fifth of eight children of Aldfrit Anton Andersen (born 1889 in Pialba, QLD) and Eileen Scott (born 1893 in Gympie, QLD). Aldfrit (a Farmer) and Eileen married in 1910 in Tiaro, QLD where they raised their family and Aldfrit worked as a Farmer, Labourer and Gardener in Tiaro, Bundaberg, Pialba, Wynnum and Southport.

Des was a Pastry Cook and Pie Vendor in Wynnum before he enlisted in the Army. In 1941 he married Joyce Isabella Veal (b 1922 in Gympie, QLD), and following his Discharge, Des and Joyce lived in Wynnum where Des worked as a Labourer before moving to Tewantin, QLD where Des worked as a Builder’s Labourer. Joyce died in 2009 and Des in 2020.
