One of three brothers to serve with the A.I.F. during the Great War, Frank Sydney Alderson was 19 years old and working as a carpenter in his father’s building business when he enlisted in February 1915. He embarked with his brother 1702 Private Henry Alderson in HMAT A9 Shropshire with the 4th Reinforcements, 13th Battalion on 17 March 1915. Following training in Egypt, the brothers landed at Gallipoli in late May 1915.
After three months service on the peninsula, 1703 Private Frank Alderson was evacuated to hospital in Malta with influenza in late August 1915, and then transferred to England for further treatment. He re-joined the 13th Battalion in Egypt in March 1916 before the battalion was transferred to France and the Western Front.
Promoted to Corporal in December 1916, he was wounded in action on 8 June 1917 near Messines, suffering a serious injury to his right hand that resulted in the loss of three fingers. He was returned to Australia in November 1917 and discharged medically unfit in March 1918.
On 10 November 1919 he married Edna Alice Earle at Armidale, New South Wales and the couple were to have three children.
In 1929 Frank Alderson was in hospital being treated for his hand wound when he died from blood poisoning and associated complications. He is buried in Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney.
His younger brother 2955 Private Charles Stanley [aka Harold Palser] was killed in action at Bullecourt on 3 May 1917.
