From How We Served
The final resting place for;- 2199 & V1153 Staff Sergeant Norman Dennis O’Neil of Northcote and West Preston, Victoria, who prior to his enlistment for War Service on the 13th of September 1915 had been employed as a laborer.
Norman was allocated to reinforcements for the 4th Light Horse Regiment 1st AIF, and was embarked for Egypt and further training on the 9th of March 1916. From Egypt, Norman was shipped to England on the 28th of May 1916, and was to spend time attached to Australian Training Battalions, until he was sent to France on the 21st of December.
Whilst in his training phase at the ‘Bull Ring’ at Etaples, Norman was hospitalized due to having contracted influenza, and following his recovery he was posted to the 8th Battalion, which he was taken on strength with on the 23rd of January 1917.
Aside brief periods of medical treatment, Norman’s service in the trenches would be continuous. On the 17th of March 1918, Norman was transferred to the 1st Division Signals Company, with which he served with until after War’s end.
Sent back to England, Norman began his repatriation back to Australia, which he departed for on the 20th of May 1919. Following his return to Australia, Norman received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 16th of August 1919.
With the outbreak of a second world War, Norman again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces on the 1st of July 1940, and would serve on Home Service with the Australian Army Medical Corps.
By 1943, Norman had risen to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was serving with the 73rd Australian Camp Hospital, when he was evacuated sick with pneumonia to the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg). Norman was still undergoing treatment when he died of illness on the 18th of October 1943, at the age of 45.
Following his premature passing, Staff Sergeant Norman O’Niel of the Australian Army Medical Corps, and a veteran of two World Wars, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
