Sergeant Ernest Henry Bartels (Service No:QX18179) enlisted in the Australian Army on 3 June 1941 as a Private. Sergeant Bartels served in New Guinea (17 February 1942 - 16 August 1943) and Borneo (21 November 1944 - 23 December 1945) and was hospitalised with Malaria. He was attached to 2/3 Australian Railway Construction Coy when he was Discharged on 8 January 1946.

Born in 1900 in Brisbane QLD, Ernest was the seventh of fourteen children of Franz Heinrich Bartels (b1865 in Germany) and Caroline Schweikert (b1872 in Rawbelle, Wide Bay, QLD). Franz immigrated in 1882, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Etna. Franz (a Cigar Maker) and Caroline married in 1894 in Brisbane, QLD where they settled and raised their family and Franz was a Cigar Maker. In 1911 the family moved to Guynan Station in Texas, QLD where Franz was a Farmer before returing to Brisbane in the mid 1920s, and Franz resumed work as a Cigar Maker.

Ernest worked as a Labourer in Boggabilla, NSW and in 1935 in Boomi, NSW he married Caroline Kerton Summons (b1910 in Inverill, NSW). Ernest and Caroline lived in Warwick QLD and Yetman, NSW where Ernest was a Tractor Driver before enlisting in the Army. They settled at Boggabilla, NSW after WII and Ernest worked as a Labourer. Ernest died in 1972 and Caroline in 1997.
