Arthur (Les) was the eldest of five children born to Carl August Martin Beyer (born 1891 in Maryborough, QLD) and Lucy Read (born 1891 in Bundaberg, QLD). Carl and Lucy married in Bundaberg in 1914 and separated in 1921 when their youngest son died at birth.
Les was a Labourer in Bundaberg QLD when he enlisted, initially in the ACMF in January 1940, and then in the Australian Army where he served as a Private (Service No: QX44208/Q24654) with 49th Infantry Battalion. He was Discharged in 1946.
Les' brother Carl (Charles) served in WWII (QX53303/Q71918), Uncle Robert Read (Q4587) served in WWI, and cousins Mervyn Frederick (Pte, Q42456), Dudley Allan Read (Q76837) and Mervyn Frederick Read (Q42456); and Lawrence Frederick Quinn (Q10993) and Robert Andrew Quinn (Q132613) served in WWII.
Les married Nellie Shoemark (born 1916 in Culcairn, NSW) in 1948 in Bundaberg, QLD. Les and Nellie settled in Bundaberg, QLD where Les worked as a Labourer and Truck Driver. Nellie died in 2007 and Les in 2011
