Archdale George BOLINGBROKE was born in Melchbourne, Bedfordshire, UK on 26th January, 1880

His parents were Frederick Henry BOLINGBROKE & Mary Helen DOUTON who married in England in 1877 (registered in Chelsea)

He married Violet Esther BURBIDGE on 5th March, 1919 in Queensland - only child David Eric was born in 1920 & died in 1935 of illness aged 15 years

Service Details

He first served for England in the Boer War where he joined as a Trooper in December, 1899

He served with the 115 Sharpshooters) Company, 25th Batallion Imperial Yeomanry (8164) and the 89th Montgomeryshire Company, 9th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry as a Lieutenant

Medals:  Queens South Africa Medal with 3 clasps & Kings South Africa Medal with 2 clasps

He enlisted as a Private on 21st September, 1914 in Townsville, Queensland & embarked from Sydney on the ship Persic on 21st December, 1914  (as 2nd Lieutenant) with the 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment - he was wounded several times and also lost an eye during WW1

He returned to Australia on 22nd December, 1918 from Suez on the ship Leicestershire and was discharged on 29th March, 1919

War Service Egypt & Gallipoli

Honours & Awards:

He was awarded a Distinguished Service Order on 26th Marh, 1917 for conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty.  He showed great dash and initiative in leading troops forward to the capture of a hostile artillery observation post, afterward taking an active part in a bayonet charge against enemy trenches (Comonwealth Gazette No. 219, 20th December, 1917

He was also Mention in dispatches from General Sir Archibald Murray for gallant or distinguished conduct in the field or for other valuable services later in 1918

During WW2 he enlisted again on 14th June 1940 & was discharged on 11th October, 1941 - last Unit was the Training Battalion Staff - rank Major

Archdale died in Caboolture War Veterans Home on 17th May, 1968 and was cremated at the Mount Thompson Memorial Gardens & Crematorium
