John was the sixth of ten children of John Boyce (b1863 in Nottinghamshire, England) and Mary Ann Spencer (b1867 in Notthinghamshire, England). John Snr - a Farm Labourer - and Mary married in 1889 in Nottinghamshire and arrived in Brisbane, QLD in 1890 on board the Taroma. They settled in Ipswich, QLD before relocating in 1903 to Nambour, where John Snr worked as a Labourer .
John worked as a Labourer in Nambour before becoming a Farmer. In 1924 in Gympie, QLD he married Bridget Anne Butler (b1905 in Gympie, QLD). John and Bridget settled at Landsborough, Wide Bay, QLD where John was a Farmer before relocating to Gympie in the mid 1930s.
John served with the Australian Army (Private; Service No:QX20812) in 1941 and was attached to 3 Reserve Motor Transport Coy when he was Discharged in December 1941. Brother William (Bill) John (Service No:4019) served in WWI and in the Militia in 1934; brother Percy Samuel (Sergeant; Service No:34541) served with the NZ Army, and brother Edward (Ned) (Sergeant; RAAF Service No:37068) served in WWII.
John and Bridget were living in Milton in Brisbane in 1943, where John worked as a Truck Driver. Following the death of son John Arthur in 1944, the couple separated and John moved to Wacol where he worked as a Labourer.
In 1950 John married Thelma Jean Kamp (nee Connors; b1925 in Bundaberg, QLD) - Thelma had served as a Private (Service No:QF271600) in WWII. Thelma and her husband were living at Wacol in 1949. John and Thelma settled at Manly near Brisbane QLD where John was a Bus Driver and Thelma worked as a Packer. John died in 1968 and Thelma in 1996.
