Son of John Ambrose Oakes and Jessie Oakes of New Canterbury Road, Hurlstone Park, NSW formerly of Moss Vale, NSW. 

Brother of Albert Oakes who returned to Australia on 14 March 1919 having served with the 13th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 3 March 1919 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 25 April 1919
