Noel was the seventh (and youngest) child of Herbert Henry Buckby (born 1876 in Brisbane, QLD) and Charlotte Margaret Bottrill (born 1890 at 185 Mile Camp, Charters Towers, QLD). Herbert and Margaret married in 1907 in Charters Towers, QLD and lived in Townsville, Charters Towers, and Dalrymple before settling in Townsville, QLD where Herbert worked as a Timbergetter and Labourer.
Noel was a Fireman in Townsville, QLD when he enlisted in the Australian Army in February 1945. He served as a Private (Service No:QX63194) with 65th Infantry Battalion - the 65th Battalion was raised at Morotai in late 1945 to serve as one of three Battalions in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan. Noel was Discharged in October 1947. Brother Herbert (Private; Service No:Q11644), and Brothers-in-Law Ronald William Gerard (Private; Service Number:Q112486), and Sydney Keith Burgess (Lance Sergeant; Service No:QX27063) also served in WWII.
In 1953 Noel married Emma Hannah Fell (born 1931 in Urandangi, QLD) in Townsville, QLD. Noel and Emma settled in Townsville, QLD. Emma died in 2006 and Noel in 2009.
