Colin was the fifth of seven children of Eli Butler (born 1880 in Gympie, QLD) and Lillian Steele (born 1887 in Ipswich, QLD). 

Colin was living in Ipswich, QLD and working as a Sawyer in 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF, serving as a Corporal (Service No: Q107877) with 61st Battalion. He was in New Guinea when he transferred in 1943 to the Australian Army - Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit (Service No: QX57433) where he served until embarking from Rabaul per the Westralia on 2 May 1946.

Brothers - Cecil James (RAAF Leading Aircraftman: Service No: 123635) and David Henry (ACMF; Private: Service No: Q104105) also served in WWII

In December 1946 Colin was in Silkstone, Ipswich, QLD when he married Mavis Audrey Loch (born 1922 in Brisbane, QLD). Colin and Mavis lived in Bundamba and Goodna in QLD where Colin worked as a Transport Driver. He died in 1993 and Mavis in 1987
