John was the eldest of six children of Henry Stanley Butler (born 1874 in Brisbane, QLD) and Ellen Nelson (born 1876 in Scotland). John was a Shop Assistant in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane QLD in 1924 when he married ivy Maud Dalton (born 1902 in Brisbane, QLD), John and Ivy continued to live in Brisbane, where by 1928 John was a Salesman.
In 1942 John enlisted in the Australian Army, serving with 7 Base Ordnance Depot as a Private (Service No: Q265550). Following his Discharge in 1945 he continued to live in Brisbane and work as a Salesman/
Brother - in - Law John Taylor (Service No: QX264) also served in WWII.
In the mid 1950s John and Ivy moved to Manly where John worked as a Hospital Orderly until his death in 1976. Ivy died in 1964
