James (Jnr) was the eldest of three children of James Maher Clarkson (born in Booval in Ipswich QLD in 1890) and Emma Jane Spall (born in Booval, Ipswich QLD in 1892). James Snr was a Miner.

James (Jnr) was a Labourer in Booval, Ipswich in QLD when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1940 as a Sapper (Service No: Q13792). He served with 7th Field Comapny Royal Australian Engineers and was Discharged in November 1941.

James returned to Booval in Ipswich QLD and was working as a Labourer when he married Hazel Mole (born 1919 in Bundamba, QLD) in the mid 1940s in Ipswich.

James and Hazel settled in Booval, Ipswich QLD where James worked as a Labourer before he joined the Coal Mines as a Miner in the early 1950s. James and Hazel remained in Booval, Ipswich QLD where James worked as Coal Miner until he retired in 1976. Hazel died in 1981 and James in 2002
