AWARD OF THE MILITARY MEDAL
"On the 10th July 1945, Corporal COSTIGAN was in command of a security patrol of 4 men operating SOUTH OF THE BUIN ROAD WEST of the MIVO RIVER. The patrol was attacked by six enemy and 2 men were seriously wounded. Corporal COSTIGAN sent the reminaing man to his company for assistance, and single handed stood over the wounded men, and engaged, killing 2 and holding off the enemy until a fighting patrol arrived. Corporal COSTIGAN then joined the fighting patrol, and moved after the enemy. Corporal COSTIGAN's coolness and disregard of his personel safety undoubtedly saved the lives of his men. On the 31st July Corporal COSTIGAN led his section as part of a fighting patrol moving SOUTH of the BUIN ROAD near the MIVON RIVER. The leading section made contact with an enemy party strongly entrenched. Intense fire prevented further advance by the leading section. Corporal COSTIGAN was ordered to attack on the left flank. When within 20 yards of the position, heavy fire halted the advance, and one man was wounded and lay exposed to enemy fire. Corporal COSTIGAN disposed his section to give covering fire, and crawled forward, and dragged the wounded man behind cover. He then led his section further to the left and attacked, killing 5 more enemy and wounding 3 of the remainder who fled from the position. During operations, Corporal COSTIGAN has displayed great personal courage and outstanding leadership, and at times, when in contact with the enemy, his fearlessness and determination and skillful handling of his section resulted in a series of successful actions."
