Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Arthur was born in Townsville, QLD, eldest child of Arthur Edward Crane (born 1891 in Georgetown, QLD) and Alice Ann Cleland (born 1902 in Clermont, QLD). Arthur, a Labourer, and Alice married in 1920 and settled in Cairns to raise their family. Arthur became a Bookmaker in the 1920's.

Arthur, a Carpenter in Cairns, enlisted in the Australian Army in July 1940 - a month before his mother's death. George served as a Private (Service No: QX15063) with 2/2 Machine Gun Battalion - which was raided in Sydney on  2 May 1940. With others from QLD, George undertook initial training at Redbank in QLD before embarking from Sydney in February 1941 for the Middle East (Egypt and Syria). Returning to Australia in 1943, the 2/2 MGB undertook jungle training in Atherton, QLD before going to New Guinea to fight the Japanese.

Brother John (Eddie) Edward served as a Private (Service No: NX129124/N437822/Q153470) with the Australian Army, and brother Gordon Thomas served with the RAN (Service No: R46372) from 1951 to 1957.

George married Sylvia in 1940, and following his Discharge in September 1945, they settled in Brisbane, QLD where George worked as a Carpenter.
