Benjamin John was the fifth of seven children of Benjamin Hewlett Snr (born 1882 at Burrum in Howard, Wide Bay, QLD) and Anne Steley (born 1894 at Biggenden, QLD). Benjamin Snr was a Miner in Howard, Wide Bay, Qld in 1911 when he married Anne. They settled in Howard, Wide Bay, Qld where Benjamin Snr worked as a Miner.

Ben Jnr was a Labourer in Howard, Wide Bay, QLD in March 1942 when he enlisted in the ACMF. He was a Private (Service No:Q136000) attached to 1 Line of Command Provost Company when he was Discharged in February 1944. Brother-in-Law William Ivor Ritchie (Sapper, Service No:Q106874) also served in WWII.

In April 1943 Ben married Alma Joyce Kelso (born 1921 in Herberton, QLD). Ben and Alma settled in Herberton, where Ben worked as a Mill Hand and Alma as a Dairy Hand. By 1954 they had relocated to Mount Garnett in Herberton, QLD where Ben worked as a Carrier. Following Alma's death in 1963, Ben worked in the Herberton Region as a Carrier and Labourer. He died in 1980.

Ben was a Cane Cutter in Howard, Wide Bay, QLD when he first enlisted in the Australian Army on 19 January 1939. He was was Discharged on 9 May 1939 (Service No:420003) and enlisted in the ACMF in March 1942. He was a Private (Service No:Q136000) with 1 Line Of Command Provost Coy when he was Discharged on 5 February 1944.
