George Hilfers Koch was born on 10 Nov 1880 at Bundaberg, Queensland, a son to Felix Bernard Theodor Wilhelm Koch and Florence Koch (nee Boreham). His father was an officer in the local Militia and Reserves and 3 of George's brithers also served in various conflicts. He married Ethel Ruby Huntington on 30 Apr 1913 residing at Taringa, Brisbane, and they had 4 Children.

He served in the South African (Boer) War, WW1 and WW2 (home duties only). First service was as a Lieutenant in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Colour Sergeant S.N. 780 rising to Lieutenant in the 9th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1. Third service was as a Corporal S.N. Q67082 in N. C. R. O. (home duties) AIF, WW2.
