John was the ninth of eleven children of William James Bilson (born 1855 in Rubicon, Victoria) and Elizabeth Mary Butler (born 1857 in Rubicon, Tasmania). William and Elizabeth farmed in Tasmania and then in Mirboo in Gippsland, Victoria.
John was farming at Mirboo in Gippsland, Victoria in March 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF, serving as a Sapper/Driver (Service no: 10974) with 10th Field Engineers. He was Discharged in August 1919 and returned to Victoria and resumed farming.
Older brother William Raymond served with the AIF (Service No: 5973).
In 1920 in Drouin, Victoria John married Agnes Irene Crole (born 1897 in Meeniyan, Victoria). John and Agnes farmed at Drouin until 1928 when they moved to Preston in Melbourne, Victoria where John worked as a Labourer and as a Fitter. John died in 1967 and Agnes in 1971
