Died on this date – 3rd April.... Driver Joseph James McCurdy was born near Lake Charm, Victoria, Australia in 1891. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 17th August, 1915 as a 24 year old Farmer from Koondrook, Victoria & embarked Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 28th January, 1916 with 1st Divisional Ammunition Column, 14th Reinforcements.

Driver McCurdy embarked to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria on 21st March, 1916 & disembarked at Marseille, France. He joined 21st Field Artillery Brigade on 15th May, 1916. He was transferred to 1st Brigade on 24th January, 1917.
Driver McCurdy was sent to Hospital sick on 26th December, 1917 with Debility & rejoined his Unit on 4th January, 1918.

Driver McCurdy proceeded on leave to UK on 8th October, 1918 & returned from leave on 26th October, 1918.

Driver McCurdy was marched out ready for return to Australia on 12th February, 1919. He embarked for England on 24th February, 1919 & marched in at No. 3 Command Depot at Parkhouse, Wiltshire on 25th February, 1919.

Driver McCurdy was absent without leave from R.B.A.A. (Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery) on 17th March, 1919. He was marched in to Parkhouse on 20th March, 1919.

Driver Joseph James McCurdy died at about 10 p.m. on 3rd April, 1919 at Demobilisation Camp, Heytesbury. He was admitted dead to 1st Australian General Hospital, Sutton Veny. Cause of death was investigated & it was found that Driver McCurdy had died of Atheroma of coronary artery, Interstitial myocarditis.

Driver Joseph James McCurdy was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 2 Australian Nurses are buried.
